Nádihegedű Hungarian Folklore Society

The Nádihegedű Hungarian Folklore Society is a youth ensemble dedicated to preserving and promoting Hungarian folk culture and increasing the awareness of the beautiful cultural resources of Hungary to Calgarians and to other Canadian communities at large.

They are a self-sustaining intellectual workplace, a creative community, where Hungarian folklore is taught to children and young people through dancing, songs, crafting and games.

Their goal is to stimulate children’s emotional and intellectual development, all while enjoying the fun, yet educative learning of folk traditions.

Nádi hegedű means reed violin in Hungarian. It is a folk instrument or children’s toy. A pond reed was used to make this simple musical instrument; it is played with a sorghum stick.
